Managing after-school care. It’s BTS time!

The ABC’s of finding great after school help
Guest blog by Amy van Weelderen of Lullaby League

Back to school is still a few weeks out but finding great after school help during the school year can be a daunting task. For many of us, the day really takes a turn at 3pm when that school bell rings.  Having an extra set of hands to help us through what many of us call “the witching hours” can be a lifesaver. University students make great after school sitters, and high school students can be great helpers but you have to get a jump start on choosing the right one that will be a good match for you and your family.  Here are the ABC’s of finding great after school help.

Oh, my Aching feet. Let’s face it, our kids are busy.  Really busy. Getting to and from all after school activities sometimes takes the wit and nerves of an air traffic controller. Car, bus, bike or a solid pair of boots, just make sure your sitter has a reliable mode of transport that everyone is comfortable with and can depend on. Review safety rules with everyone, no matter how elementary,  so everyone is clear and safe.

Best laid plans of mice and men often go astray. How many times has your day gone more than just a bit sideways?  Life with kids is a big juggling act.  You and your sitter need to be able to roll with the punches and improvise when needed with minimal stress and a smile. Make sure your sitter can handle and is ok with curve balls when plans get thrown into the air.

Come on, seriously?  Don’t have unrealistic expectations of an after school sitter. Be very clear and upfront form the beginning in what you want and need them to provide.   If you need a personal chef, housekeeper and tutor for Junior, than hire professionals for those skilled tasks. After school help is just that, helping out after school so hire who and what you really need.
